American Cemetery of Colleville-Sur-Mer
Colleville-Sur-Mer serves as a memorial site for those who died in the Leopoldville incident. The cemetery honors American soldiers who died during the Battle of Normandy in World War II. It is 70 hectares and is located on the heights overlooking Omaha Beach, one of the landing beaches of Normandy. The cemetery replaced a first temporary cemetery at an area known as Ruquet. There laid buried about 9,387 people, including 307 unidentified and four women. Most of the buried people died on D-Day or during their time in Normandy. They were first repatriated to the United States at the request of their families. Near the memorial monument in the “garden of the dead” are the names of 1,557 fallen soldiers. |
